BFS Newsletter #136 - Is Blogging on the Decline?
Hi, <<First Name>>!  It's been an interesting week with a few "DOH!" moments.  I'm pet sitting an hour away from my house, yet I left my laptop behind during a visit yesterday.  That stunk.  Luckily my hubby was free enough to meet me halfway so I didn't have to drive the full 2 hours roundtrip to pick it up.  Thank you, love of mine!  I sound all thankful and okay with it now, but I was wallowing around feeling really stupid when I realized what I had done.  Note to self, wallowing doesn't help.

Denise asked, "Do you believe blogging as we know it is on the decline? I’ve noticed a lot less interaction on the blogs I enjoy – seems everyone is moving to social media but I still prefer reading blog so I hope this trend is short lived."

I think that blogging is cyclical.  I know it isn't dying off anytime soon just based on how many new people jump into it all of the time.  But I have also noticed less commenting and interaction now than there was when I started 4 1/2 years ago.  I don't know if it's because our regular commenters have just cycled out before the new bloggers have cycled in or what, but I don't think blogging is ending.  It's just a slower communication part of the cycle.

Alexa asked, "I’m curious if you believe that online advertising through blogs in on the decline? It seems like Google is really cracking down and taking a lot different bloggers Page Ranks away. And I would think advertisers would be scared to use these tactics after Matt Cutt’s post on guest blogging.

Do you think this sort of advertising will completely go away over the next couple of years?"

It definitely feels slower than usual, but it felt very similar in early 2012 too.  I think that Google definitely affects how advertisers reach out, but that blog advertising won't end.  Companies are regrouping and forming new plans of attack.  Paid guest posts will probably continue for years, but they may not take center stage like before.  I am noticing that some advertisers are leaning more on product reviews and giveaways.  Others are offering better affiliate payouts.  And others are sticking with business as usual.  Time will tell whether this is just a low part of a cycle or an actual shift to new types of ads is happening.

Thanks for being the best readers ever!
