BFS Newsletter #81 - Quick Explanation of a Google Slap
Hi <<First Name>>!  Have you been hearing the term "Google slap" on sites like mine and wondered what we are talking about?  Here's the quick explanation for any new or future bloggers.  :-)

Google will "slap" you - drop your Google Page Rank (PR) - if you break their terms of service.  One of those terms is that you will not sell paid links.  They say it's so their search algorithm isn't messed with, but another assumption is because they rather not have any competition for Google Adsense or any of it's ad sales to others.  Whatever the reason, it does happen frequently.  It's happened to BFS twice so far.  You have to be okay with the idea of not having a PR if you sell do follow links. Otherwise, I would avoid breaking Google's terms of service and go the affiliate ad route or create your own products.

Mutant Supermodel asked, "How much revenue can one expect to make from a blog when they get started?"

You won't make anything for at least the first couple of months.  Then, if you grow really quickly, you will start receiving emailed direct ad opportunities.  Then you have to decide whether to sell links, skip monetizing altogether, or to pass on the early money and grow faster in order to be successful at affiliate advertising or product sales.  In general, a solid blog can start bringing in about $6000 a year and the sky really is the limit.  Check out Smart Passive Income to be really impressed.  :-)

Thanks for being the best readers ever!
